Blank Lands

In 1934, ethnographer and photographer Zhuang Xueben set out across the remote borderlands of western China, documenting the peoples he found there. Decades later, the filmmakers retrace his route, rediscovering the same landscapes — and, in one case, the same person he once photographed — to ask what remains of a place and its people across eighty years of change.
